My doctoral thesis concentrates on such variable renewable energy sources (VRE) as wind and solar power, whose output varies based on weather conditions. The goal of my research is to find efficient and sustainable solutions to the integration of VRE into the Nordic power market.
Use of VRE is going to increase in the future due to the set climate targets. Besides direct generation and investment costs, the weather dependency incurs indirect costs in power systems. These costs are related to the utilization of other power generation technologies, the need to maintain constant balance between demand and supply in the power grid, and reinforcing the transmission grid.
In my dissertation I quantify the integration costs of VRE and find market mechanisms to help the integration. Both the supply (investment) and the demand side are considered. For example, in the supply side market-based profitability of large-scale energy storage (pumped hydro) will be examined. The impacts of dynamic pricing models (real-time pricing) will be investigated in the demand side.
